What We Pay Papamani For

To help secure Darrenwood as effectively as possible, the community funds Papamani Security, which provides two key services:

  • Manned security at the booms, and
  • A growing surveillance camera system.

1. Boom Guards

The guards stationed at our booms serve primarily as a visible deterrent to crime. As per municipal regulations (see road closure page), they may not stop or impede traffic or request identification from motorists.

They are on duty 24/7, and play a vital supporting role by maintaining radio communication with patrolling security vehicles, allowing for rapid coordination in the event of suspicious activity.

2. Camera System

We began with a modest setup and have since expanded to a network of 27 cameras. These require ongoing maintenance, which includes:

  • Replacing or repairing batteries, solar panels, and communication systems
  • Addressing hardware failures such as faulty PoE switches or camera units

These cameras are monitored from Papamani's control room, providing an important, though supportive, layer of crime prevention.

Please note: The system does not include advanced features like number plate recognition (LPR) or AI-based alerts. While these would be highly beneficial, they are currently out of reach due to budget constraints and limited contributions.

It's important to understand that camera systems alone do not prevent crime, but they help to deter criminal activity and assist in responding to incidents or gathering evidence.

What You Can Do at Home

Each resident is responsible for securing their own property. If you wish to add an extra layer of protection for yourself and your family, we recommend a layered security approach, starting from your boundary and working inward:

🔐 1. Boundary Wall

  • Criminals often target homes with low or poorly secured fences.
  • Consider building or reinforcing your boundary wall.
  • Electric fencing or razor wire (though potentially harmful to pets) can provide an added layer of deterrence.
  • Secure your gate and gate motor against tampering or theft.

🌳 2. Garden Security

  • Outdoor beams can help detect movement early.
  • Be aware: beams are also targeted for theft.
  • A good option is to keep beams armed most of the time, or set them to chime when disarmed so you're alerted to any activity in your yard.

📹 3. CCTV Cameras

  • Install cameras with a monitor inside your home—especially if you work from home.
  • Position the screen where it's visible (e.g., in your home office), so you can quickly check if you hear a noise or a beam is triggered.

🚪 4. Home Defenses

  • Install security gates and burglar bars on doors and windows.
  • Lock them when appropriate—especially at night or when you're not actively using those entrances.

🚨 5. Alarm System & Panic Buttons

  • Install an alarm system linked to a security company (like Papamani).
  • Use panic buttons, and place them in multiple, accessible areas of the home.

By combining community-level services like those provided by Papamani with personal, layered home security, we can continue to make Darrenwood a safe and welcoming place to live.

WhatsApp Groups and Access to Darrenwood Watch

Following the creation of the Residents Association, the establishment of the road closure, and the installation of security booms, several WhatsApp groups were set up to support communication in the community.

Some of these groups serve social or broader community purposes, and include members who live outside the boomed area. It's worth noting that Darrenwood as a suburb spans both sides of Judges Avenue, including streets such as Durham Road, which fall outside the boomed section.

To focus specifically on security within the boomed area, we created the Darrenwood Watch WhatsApp group. This group was originally open to everyone, and we benefited from having more eyes on the ground, with residents helping to spot and report suspicious activity.

However, this open approach has presented two major concerns:

  1. Security risk – Without vetting, there is a possibility that criminals or opportunists may have joined the group, gaining insight into our security patterns or operations.
  2. Unfair benefit – Many members of the group do not contribute financially to our security efforts, yet still enjoy the advantages of a safer neighbourhood and real-time updates.

While we were in a strong financial position, we tolerated this open model in the spirit of community cooperation. But as contribution levels have dropped significantly, we are now in a critical situation, and need to act decisively to protect the resources we all rely on.

As a result, we are currently in the process of limiting access to the Darrenwood Watch group to verified owners and residents of households who actively contribute to our security costs.

We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to ensure fairness and maintain the effectiveness of our safety efforts.
